History

The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1926 and gave its first concert at the Indiana Theatre. The first music director was Will H. Bryant. Under Bryant's direction, the orchestra featured such soloists as Isaac Stern. 2020 will be its 94th season and it remains the oldest Orchestra in Indiana.
In the summer of 1933, the orchestra began its annual concert series; by 1962, the entire membership consisted of professional musicians. Historically, the Orchestra has had a strong volunteer contribution -- today, the board is composed of community leaders. The Terre Haute Women's Symphony Society was founded in 1964; today the Terre Haute Symphony League remains the principal support organization for the Orchestra.
In addition, an education outreach program for local youth is provided throughout the summer, "Adventures in Music" provides local children an introduction into music, instruments and composers as wide-ranging as Aaron Copland, John Williams to Mozart and Tchaikovsky.
