Kai Tak station


Kai Tak is an underground MTR rapid transit station located on the Tuen Ma line, in the Kai Tak Development area of Hong Kong. The station was opened on 14 February 2020 along with the rest of the Tuen Ma line Phase 1. It will provide access to the multi-purpose Kai Tak Stadium, currently under construction, as well as other facilities. The station was built as part of the Sha Tin to Central Link. Before Kai Tak Airport closed, the closest station to it was Diamond Hill.

History

The contract to construct Kai Tak Station, valued at HK$1,422,000,000, was awarded on 25 April 2013 to the Kaden-Chun Wo joint venture. The station was built using the cut-and-cover method. A topping-out ceremony was held on 16 July 2015. It was the second SCL station to be topped out, after Hin Keng.
The station opened on 14 February 2020.

Wartime Bomb Discovered

17 July 2020, because of a wartime bomb found near Kai Tak Station, to cope with police action, Kai Tak Station was temporarily closed. Tuen Ma Line Phase 1 trains will not stop at the station. Train service was maintained 5~7-minute intervals between Diamond Hill Station and Wu Kai Sha Station. At 22:21, Train service between Diamond Hill Station and Wu Kai Sha Station was reduced to 15-minute intervals, Train service between Tai Wai Station and Wu Kai Sha Station was maintained 7.5-minute intervals.

Features

The station includes an artwork within the adit leading to Exit A. Entitled Memories of Kai Tak – 1925–1998, the piece comprises a display of more than 30 photos and other materials related to the former Kai Tak Airport. It was designed by Cliff Dunnaway, author of two books about Hong Kong's aviation history.

Station layout

The station has two levels: a concourse level above a lower level with an island platform.
As of 2020, Kai Tak Station is currently the southern terminus of the Tuen Ma Line Phase 1. Trains currently both terminate at and depart from platform 2 - southbound Tuen Ma line trains use the crossover track located just north of the station to switch to the northbound track. Platform 1 will remain out of service until the full opening of the line in Q1 2021.
