Daria (name)

Daria or Darya is the female variant of the ancient-Persian origin name of Darius. In modern-day Persia, the male variant of the name, Daria, is commonly written as Dara. Daria is a saint of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. In Modern Persian, daryā coincidentally means "sea". The male variant Dara means "wealthy" or "prosperous".
The name has been used extensively in Russia and other Slavic countries. The common Russian nickname is Dasha. It has sometimes also been seen as a Russian form of the name Dorothy, though the names have different origins. In Romania, in 2014, Daria was the 8th most popular name for baby girls. Dolly, a diminutive of Dorothy, may also sometimes used as a nickname for Darya as it was for a character in Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina." The name is also used among Iranians, especially those who live near the Caspian sea.
