Vistasp Karbhari


Vistasp Karbhari is an Indian-American Parsi civil engineer and university administrator. Karbhari was the eighth president of the University of Texas at Arlington. Prior to that, he was provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He is known for his research in composite materials and structural engineering.

Life and career

Karbhari earned his Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering degrees from the University of Pune in India, and PhD from the University of Delaware. Before moving to Alabama in 2008, he was a professor of structural engineering and of materials science at the University of California, San Diego. He is an author or co-author of 200 refereed archival papers in different scientific journals.
As President of The University of Texas at Arlington, Karbhari was recognized for his initiatives for STEM programs within the University. Under his tenure, the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington has seen an increase in enrollment and funding. On March 4, 2020, Karbhari announced his resignation from the presidency effective August 31, 2020, after the university system began investigating recruiting and enrollment practices. On March 19, 2020, the Office of the Chancellor of the UT System sent an email out stating that Dr. Karbhari had sent a letter adjusting the timeline of his resignation to be effective immediately.
