Its primary focus is soccer in the United States, but it also covers the international game extensively. It was begun by publisher Clay Berling during a period of increased interest in youth soccer and new pro leagues. It has been a primary source of information for American pro soccer leagues, from the NASL to Major League Soccer. It also covers college and the American men's and women's national teams.
Its national rankings of college soccer teams were a primary source of national recognition for the top 20 teams during each collegiate soccer season, released from September through December. The publication is based in Oakland, California, and has gradually moved more from strict mail distribution towards online newsletter and website in tandem with mailed issues to subscribers in order to offset the time lag inherent in transmitting small newsmagazines via the mail.
