S. A. Chandrasekhar


S. A. Chandrasekar is an Indian film director, producer and writer who primarily works in Tamil film Industry. He made his directorial debut with Aval Oru Pachai Kuzhanthai, He got his breakthrough with Sattam Oru Iruttarai. He has directed over 70 movies in all south Indian languages and he is known for the direction of socially-themed films.

Personal life

S. A. Chandrasekhar is from Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. His father was Senathipathy Pillai. He is married to Shoba, a carnatic singer. He is the father of Tamil actor Vijay, who debuted in his directorial Naalaiya Theerpu. Chandrasekhar had a daughter Vidya who died at the age of 2. His brother-in-law S. N. Surendar is a playback singer and voice artist and his nephew Vikranth is an actor.

Film career

Chandrasekar has directed over 70 movies in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.
Some of his hits include Sattam Oru Iruttarai, Chattaniki Kallu Levu, Nyaya Ellide, Vetri, Naan Sigappu Manithan, Sattam Oru Vilayaattu, Sendhoorapandi, Rasigan, Deva, Once More and Nenjirukkum Varai.
He introduced Vijay and directed several films in his formative years such as Naalaiya Theerpu, Sendhoorapandi, Rasigan, Deva and Vishnu. His son acted in his direction including special appearances.
Most of his movies are with Vijayakanth and Vijay.
He also directed hit Telugu movies such as Chattaniki Kallu Levu and Palletoori Monagadu with Chiranjeevi.
He has appeared in supporting roles in some movies such as Kudumbam, Pudhu Yugam, Naan Sigappu Manithan, Neethiyin Marupakkam, Enakku Nane Needipathi, Vasantha Raagam, Nilave Malare, Neethikku Thandanai, Sattam Oru Vilayaattu, Innisai Mazhai, Deva, Priyamudan, Sukran and Kodi.
Directors S. Shankar, M. Rajesh, Ponram had worked with him as assistants.
In the early 2000s, Chandrasekhar slowed down his work as a director and focused on business interests, including on the construction of a three star hotel for his son. In 2000, he began pre-production work on a film titled Dhoosi with Sarathkumar but the project was later shelved.
He turned as the lead actor at the age of 70 in Touring Talkies which is also his last directorial venture. With Nayyapudai, is the veteran's second attempt in heroics.
S. A. Chandrasekhar returned after a break with a biopic on social activist Traffic Ramasamy. He has an uncanny resemblance to real life is aptly cast and he does full justice to his role with his energetic performance.
With a romantic entertainer movie, Titled Capmaari, it was his 70th film.
