Jean Machi


Jean Manuel Machi is a Venezuelan professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. He previously played in Major League Baseball for the San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners. He was with the Giants for their 2014 World Series win.

Career

Minor leagues

In, Machi played in the Toronto Blue Jays organization and was released after the season. He then signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Diablos Rojos del México

Machi spent the 2011 season with the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican Baseball League.

San Francisco Giants

On September 1, 2012, Machi was called up by the Giants after serving as the closer for the Fresno Grizzlies, San Francisco's Triple-A affiliate. On September 3, Machi made his major league debut, against the Arizona Diamondbacks, pitching a perfect inning.
At the start of the 2014 season, Machi picked up three relief wins in his team's first 15 games, becoming the first Giants pitcher to do so since Bob Shaw in 1964.

Boston Red Sox

On July 20, 2015, Machi was designated for assignment by the Giants. He was claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox on July 28. In order to make room for Machi on the 40-man roster, starter Clay Buchholz was transferred from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list. He elected free agency on November 6, 2015.

Chicago Cubs

On December 14, 2015, Machi signed a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training with the Chicago Cubs. He was released on June 5, 2016.

Second stint with San Francisco

On June 16, 2016, Machi signed a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants.

Seattle Mariners

Machi signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners on January 30, 2017. He started the season with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, and the Mariners selected his contract on May 2. He was designated for assignment on May 13.

Chicago White Sox

On July 21, 2017, Machi was traded to the Chicago White Sox, along with fellow veteran pitcher Mark Lowe, and assigned to AAA. On October 2, 2017, Machi refused a major league assignment, becoming a free agent.

Return to Diablos Rojos

On February 7, 2018, Machi signed with the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican Baseball League. He was released on July 2, 2018.

Sugar Land Skeeters

On July 15, 2018, Machi signed with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. He re-signed with the team on May 2, 2019, and was later released on June 28, 2019.

Personal life

On June 9, 2016, Machi was arrested in Des Moines, Iowa for public intoxication, and urinating in public.
