Indian Institute of Management Bangalore
Indian Institute of Management Bangalore is a public business school and Institute of National Importance located in Bangalore, India. Founded in 1973, it was the third IIM to be established, after IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad.
IIMB is a globally ranked institute as per the QS World University Rankings and Financial Times Global MBA Rankings. The institute offers Post Graduate, Doctoral, Executive Education and Certificate programmes.
The Post Graduate Programme in Management, a two-year, full-time residential MBA programme, is offered to candidates admitted through the Common Admission Test. IIM Bangalore offers the Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management, a one-year full-time MBA programme for candidates admitted through Graduate Management Admission Test. IIMB also offers two-year part-time executive MBA programme for working executives, a one-year full-time programme - Master of Management Studies and a two-year full-time MBA programme in Business Analytics, apart from the Doctor of Philosophy, which is committed to training individuals to excel in their area of research by publishing quality work of international standard. The Certificate Programmes include the N. S. Ramaswamy Pre-doctoral Fellowship, which is a one-year full-time apprenticeship programme with a focus on inclusion, and the Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship, a two-year academic programme, which is a unique opportunity for young, dynamic individuals to contribute to enhancing skill development and promote rural employment at the district level.
In addition to its academic programmes, the institute is engaged in facilitating research, offering consulting services, conducting seminars and academic conferences, and publishing journals.
History
In 1972, a committee headed by Ravi J. Matthai, noting the rising demand for graduates of the first two prestigious IIMs namely IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad, recommended the need to have two more IIMs. While the first two IIMs were oriented towards the private sector, it was decided that the new institutions should oriented towards the public sector to cater to its growing needs of management graduates. The Institute at Bangalore was consequently set up in the following year, designed to cater exclusively to the needs of public sector enterprises. For the proposed institute, the Government of Karnataka offered of land free of cost and a contribution of. T. A. Pai and N. S. Ramaswamy were appointed as Chairman and Director respectively. The institute was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, on October 28, 1973. The institute was started in St. Joseph's College of Commerce, and some other buildings, which were rented on the Langford Road. The new institute came up at the Bannerghatta Road campus in South Bangalore in 1983.The two-year Post Graduate Programme commenced in July 1974 and the first convocation of the institute was held on July 10, 1976 with a total of 48 graduating students. On August 27, 1998, the Post Graduate Programme in Software Enterprise Management was launched with an intake of 58 students. The institute's start-up incubation centre, N S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning came into existence in March 2002. It was supported by grants from Nadathur Sarangapani Raghavan, an Indian industrialist, and one of the seven founders of Infosys Technologies.
On June 07, 2002, the Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management was launched. The participants of the programme were members of the Indian Civil Services. On April 03, 2009, the one-year Executive Post Graduate Programme was launched for professionals with seven to fifteen years of work experience.
In May 2016, the institute partnered with Michael & Susan Dell Foundation to offer incubation for social enterprises and not-for-profit start-ups.
Motto
The motto derived from Sanskrit तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु is an extract from the Shanti Mantra recited in Taittiriya Upanishad, Katha Upanishad, Mandukya Upanishad and Shvetashvatara Upanishad. The motto translates to 'The current IIMB logo depicting the sun, was designed by the National Institute of Design and has been in use since 1994.
Academics
Prior to 2018, IIM Bangalore awarded diplomas instead of degrees because the IIMs were not set up as universities through an Act of Parliament but as societies under the Societies Act. The Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017 enacted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in December 2017 declared IIMs as Institutes of National Importance, thereby allowing IIMs to award degrees to their students instead of diplomas. Consequently, in 2018, IIM Bangalore became the first IIM to award MBA degree to the graduates of the Post Graduate Programme in Management.IIM Bangalore offers degree-granting programmes which lead to Master of Business Administration, Master of Management Studies in Public Policy, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. In addition to the full-time programmes, the institute offers a wide variety of on-campus short-duration certificate programmes. It also offers a plethora of Massive Open Online Courses including the Micro Masters Programme in Management through the edX platform.
Degree Granting Programmes
IIM Bangalore offers six degree-granting programmes: a full-time doctoral programme, three full-time MBA programmes, an executive MBA programme -, and a full-time programme in Public Policy.Certificate Programmes
IIM Bangalore offers two full-time certificate programmes.- N. S. Ramaswamy Pre-doctoral Fellowship - Launched in 2018, the fellowship programme helps participants prepare for a prestigious doctoral degree in management.
- Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship - Launched in 2020, this programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India that is designed and implemented by IIM Bangalore and in collaboration with State Skill Development Missions. The two-year Fellowship seeks to combine classroom sessions at IIM Bangalore with an intensive field immersion at the district level to create credible plans and identify barriers in raising employment, economic output, and promote livelihoods in rural areas.
International Collaborations and Student Exchange Programmes
Doctoral exchange is also available with schools such as National University of Singapore, University of Cologne, and schools in the United States. Scholarships are provided by partner schools or by government grants such as German Academic Exchange Service.
IIM Bangalore conducts an international immersion programme for the one year MBA candidates in the fourth term. The two-week programme gives one year students an opportunity to take courses in some of the leading universities in Asia and Europe. Structured around a visit to an emerging economy such as China, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa or a developed one in Europe or in the Asian region like Singapore or South Korea, the module provides insights into the country's economic, social, political and cultural life.
Global Network for Advanced Management
Launched in 2012, the Global Network for Advanced Management includes 30 leading business schools from diverse regions, countries, cultures, and economies in different phases of development. IIMB is the only Indian management school to be a member of the Global Network for Advanced Management. The network provides students of partner schools access to select courses offered by other partner schools through the use of digital technology, just as it offers the opportunity to faculty members to teach an international class comprising students from the member schools.Journal : IIMB Management Review (IMR)

The current campus is located at Bannerghatta Road in Bangalore and was designed by Pritzker prize winning architect B. V. Doshi in partnership with Joseph Allen Stein and Jai Rattan Bhalla. It was completed in 1983. The campus occupying an area of over 100- acres is located in South Bangalore. The IIMB campus design is admired for its unique all-stone architecture and lush woods. IIMB is in the process of setting up its second campus on the outskirts of the city near Jigani in Anekal.Architecture
One of the masterpieces designed by the famed architect, the inspiration for the design of IIMB was gardens and temples. Long corridors meander across lawns, and sunlight shines through pergolas into various parts of the building, creating a play of light and shadow.
The design of IIMB is a shining example of sustainable architecture and an eco-friendly campus design with locally available granite being the primary building material.
Academic Blocks
The academic blocks were designed by Stein, Doshi & Bhalla architects led by B. V. Doshi and were completed by 1983. A few blocks were added later owing to the increase in the number of students being enrolled. The classes, faculty offices and other administrative entities are spread over the various blocks. Hostels and Sports Centre
IIMB consists of 16 hostel blocks apart from one executive block and the executive accommodation at the Management Development Centre. The hostel consists of 16 blocks named from A to P. IIMB has separate facilities for soccer, cricket, tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and pool. Nadathur S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning, renamed NSRCEL, was set up in 2002 to aid the entrepreneurial activities at IIMB. The centre acts as an incubator for new business ideas. It is a vibrant ecosystem of industry experts, mentors, researchers, and academicians aimed at providing incubation to early-stage ventures across various stages, sectors, and scope. As of April 2020, NSRCEL has incubate more than 240 start-ups with a combined value of $ 1.5 billion and created more than 5400 jobs.Campus life

IIMB started offering Massive Open Online Courses in 2014 through its digital learning initiative, IIMBx, in partnership with edX – a not-for-profit online initiative of Harvard and MIT. Apart from edX, the programme offers courses on its own platform, IIMBx, and SWAYAM.IIMBx offers MOOCs in all areas of management – data and insights, economics, finance, marketing, people management, operations, and strategy. There are programmes for every kind of learner, ranging from first-generation entrepreneurs to college educators looking to teach better.
Good quality management education cannot reach the large numbers of interested learners through classroom-based education alone. The IIMBx programme is founded on the philosophy that everyone – irrespective of financial or regional constraints – should have access to quality education. Led by IIMB faculty, IIMBx uses digital learning tools to enable anytime, anywhere learning in a global classroom.
