Hinds County Sheriff's Office


The Hinds County Sheriffs Department is a law enforcement agency in Hinds County, Mississippi, which is charged with the responsibility of providing police services to areas of the county that are unincorporated or in municipalities that do not have their own local police force. It was founded on January 1, 1928.
The current sheriff is Lee D. Vance who was sworn in on January 3, 2020. The former sheriff was Tyrone Lewis who took office January 3, 2012. Victor Mason defeated Tyrone Lewis August 4, 2015 as Lewis sought another term. Mason went on to secure the Office November 3, 2015. Mason defeated 3 other candidates securing more than seventy percent of the vote. The sheriff previous to Tyrone Lewis was Malcolm E. McMillin of 20 years.
Victor Mason was defeated in the Democratic Primary on August 27, 2019 by Lee D. Vance.
The county's largest city in population is Jackson, the state's capital.

Since the establishment of the Hinds County Sheriff's Office, one officer has died while on duty, jailer J. C. Landrum, on Tuesday, September 14, 1954, due to an assault.
