Daniel Postgate


Daniel Postgate, is an English illustrator, and writer. His books include Smelly Bill, Engelbert Sneem and His Dream Vacuum Machine, and Big Mum Plum. In 2014, he collaborated with Peter Firmin on the production of a new series of The Clangers, with Postgate writing many of the episodes winning a Bafta for the episode 'I am the Eggbot'. After the death of his father, Oliver Postgate, he inherited Smallfilms, the company set up by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin. Smallfilms is a company that has made Pingwings, Pogles' Wood, Noggin the Nog, Ivor the Engine, Clangers and Bagpuss, and were shown on the BBC between the 1950s and the 1980s, and on ITV from 1959 to the present day.

Career

When Postgate moved to London he became a regular contributor to The Sunday Times. Eventually he wrote a story and made it into a rough book which he sent to fifteen publishers. Postgate has written many children's books and written multiple episodes of the CBeebies Television show The clangers which won a Bafta in 2015 and he was nominated again the following year for best writer.

Personal life

Postgate was born in Whitstable, Kent, and attended the Canterbury Technical College. He has worked as a chef, a painter of horses and sea scenes on old wooden boxes, a freelance cartoonist, and a picture book illustrator. Postgate has 2 children, a son and a daughter.

Early life

Postgate was born in Whitstable Hospital on 5 February 1964. He was the youngest of six children. He grew up in Blean, a village just outside Whitstable, and he lived in a large house which was once a pub.
