Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency

Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency is a five-member Group Representation Constituency in the north eastern region of Singapore. The constituency encompasses the majority of Ang Mo Kio, Seletar Hills, the northern half of Serangoon North, a portion of northern Hougang, Jalan Kayu and a portion of Fernvale. Prior to the 2020 Singapore General Election, the entirety of Fernvale were redrawn and divided under Fernvale and Jalan Kayu subsections, having previously been represented in Sengkang West SMC since 2006.
The western portion of the GRC consists of parts of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve while in the Northeastern corner, it fronts a short coastline in the Straits of Johor with two reclaimed islands, Pulau Punggol Barat and Pulau Punggol Timor. The northeast also includes the Sengkang Floating Wetland.
After the 2020 General Elections, this GRC is still a stronghold of the People's Action Party after being created. It is now still led by Mr Lee Hsien Loong who is the Third Prime Minister of Singapore and Secretary General of the People's Action Party.

History

In the 2001 general election, the constituency was enlarged to include most parts of the Cheng San Group Representation Constituency, while during the general election in 2006, the Yio Chu Kang division – where the centre of Ang Mo Kio town is located – was hived off as a Single Member Constituency. In 2011, Yio Chu Kang was returned to Ang Mo Kio GRC, while the Sengkang West division was carved out into an SMC, which till today is still managed by the Ang Mo Kio Town Council.
Nee Soon South had been part of the GRC until 2011 and Kebun Baru had been part of the GRC until 2015 – both were transferred to the Nee Soon GRC. In their place, parts of northern Hougang were progressively introduced into the GRC – Aljunied–Hougang was introduced in place of Nee Soon South, and Punggol South in place of Kebun Baru. In the 2020 elections, Kebun Baru and Yio Chu Kang became SMCs while the GRC absorbed the Fernvale portion of Sengkang West SMC. In return, the Anchorvale portion of Sengkang West SMC was formed into the newly-created Sengkang Group Representation Constituency, and Ang Mo Kio GRC's seats were reduced by one to five seats.
From 2015 to June 2020 before Parliament was dissolved, Ang Mo Kio GRC was led by the third Prime Minister of Singapore and PAP secretary-general Lee Hsien Loong, who was the MP for the Teck Ghee district since 1984, and it was co-led by Dr Koh Poh Koon who is the Senior Minister of State. The GRC has been held by the People's Action Party since its formation in 1991, and had been uncontested in every general election until 2006.
