was the defending champion, and successfully defended her title, defeating Li Na in the final 4–6, 6–4, 6–3 to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 2013 Australian Open.
Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams were in contention for the WTA No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament. Azarenka retained the top ranking at the end of the tournament by winning the title after Sharapova and Williams lost in the semifinals and quarterfinals, respectively.
