The participation of Rangers was dependent on the outcome of a vote by SPL clubs on whether or not a "newco" Rangers will be allowed an SPL licence. When the fixture list was published on 18 June 2012, Rangers were replaced by the term "Club 12", pending the outcome of the vote. Eight clubs publicly declared that they would oppose the newco Rangers, which would mean that it could not enter the SPL. The vote took place on 4 July 2012, and the newco Rangers were refused entry to the SPL. Dundee were promoted from the Scottish First Division after finishing second in the 2011-12 season.Scottish First Division
