Whit Johnson


Whitney C. "Whit" Johnson is an American journalist and co-anchor of the weekend editions of Good Morning America.

Early life

Johnson was born and raised in San Francisco, California. His career has taken him through four states and Washington, D.C. He graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.A. degree in Television and Radio Broadcasting. Johnson credits his stepfather, TV and radio host Dean Edell, for introducing him to the world of broadcasting.

Career

Early in Johnson's career, he worked as an evening weekday anchor and reporter for KSL-TV, the NBC affiliate in Salt Lake City, Utah. He started his on-air career as a weekend evening anchor and weekday reporter for KNDO / KNDU, the NBC-affiliated duopoly Yakima / Tri-Cities, Washington.
Johnson joined CBS News as a network correspondent and fill-in anchor in 2009. While there, much of his coverage focused on the White House, on Capitol Hill and foreign policy issues.
Johnson joined KNBC in 2012 as a general assignment reporter. In that role, he traveled to Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics, reported from Boston for Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential run, covered the Washington D.C. Navy Yard mass shootings, and the Asiana flight 214 crash landing in San Francisco International Airport. In June 2014, he joined Today in L.A., as co-anchor alongside Daniella Guzman. The pair replaced Michael Brownlee, who was moved to the station's noon newscasts, and Michelle Valles, who was moved to the weekend morning newscasts. Johnson announced on December 13, 2017 that he was leaving KNBC to pursue other interests.
Johnson first appeared on the ABC News program Good Morning America as a correspondent and co-anchor in March 2018. He debuted on ABC World News Tonight on March, 21, 2018.
On September 29, 2018, the network announced that Johnson would take over as a co-anchor of the weekend editions of Good Morning America.
Johnson's first day on Good Morning America was September 30, 2018.

Personal life

Johnson lives in the New York area with his wife, married on August 11, 2007, Andrea Fujii, an employee of KCBS-TV / KCAL-TV, with his two daughters.
In 2018, Johnson unwittingly found his father's brother through a 23andMe DNA test.
