Westminster City Hall

Westminster City Hall is a municipal building in Victoria Street in Westminster, London.

History

The building was commissioned to replace the aging Westminster City Hall in Charing Cross Road which had been designed by Robert Walker and completed in 1890. The old building, which adjoined the Garrick Theatre, had become the headquarters of the Metropolitan Borough of Westminster in 1900 and had been enlarged in 1902.
The new 20-storey building in Victoria Street formed part of a larger development by Land Securities. It was designed by Burnet Tait & Partners in the modern style, built by Taylor Woodrow Construction and was opened in April 1965. It became the local seat of government of the enlarged City of Westminster which was formed that year. Initially the council only used the 20th floor but gradually expanded to take the whole building. It is high.
The building was stripped back to a concrete shell in an extensive refurbishment between 2017 and 2019.
