"Weird" is a song written and performed by the Americanpop rock bandHanson. It was the fourth single released from the band's major label debut album, Middle of Nowhere, and became a moderate hit worldwide, charting within the top 20 in Australia, Canada, Finland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. It was also featured in the 1997 film The Borrowers, playing during the end credits.
Chart performance
"Weird" performed well in the United Kingdom, peaking at number 19 on the UK Singles Chart and becoming their fourth top-twenty hit there. It also did well on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, charting at number 12, the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart, reaching number 11, and the New Zealand RIANZ Singles Chart, peaking at number 10. It charted the highest in Finland, where it rose to number four during its third week on the Finnish Singles Chart.
Music video
The music video for "Weird" was directed by Gus Van Sant. The shots in the white room were filmed in a giant round Victorian room with a floor of lights that rolled on its side and was twenty feet tall. The room rotated and was built by Tom Foden who has also designed and built the spaceship for Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson's "Scream" video. The painting on the wall of the white room was The Judgment of Solomon by eighteenth-century Italian painterGiovanni Battista Tiepolo and was a smooth, enlarged color print, so Hanson could slide across it as the room revolved. Another tricky part of the video shoot was having Hanson swim underwater and lip sync to the song at the same time. This sequence was designed by visual effect supervisor Ash Beck. The brothers wore weights so they would not float out of shot. They also had to hold their breath for a whole verse while they swam towards the camera. The video also shows Hanson in Times Square and on the New York City Subway. The version of the track used in the video differed slightly from the album cut. The video version contained extra backing vocals from Isaac and Zac Hanson and contained a different intro. The name of the version in the video is the "Movo Mix", which was only released on a promotional single released in the US in 1998.
