Washburn is a city in McLean County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of McLean County. The population was 1,246 at the 2010 census. Washburn was founded in 1882 and became the county seat in 1883. The city's name honors General Cadwallader C. Washburn. Washburn is home to the North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center which focuses on the Expedition's winter with the Mandans and houses a full-scale replication of Fort Mandan and one of the expedition's canoes.

The racial makeup of the city was 98.0% White, 0.1% African American, 0.6% Native American, 0.5% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population. There were 551 households of which 25.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.3% were married couplesliving together, 4.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 33.0% were non-families. 29.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.76. The median age in the city was 46.2 years. 21.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.2% were from 25 to 44; 35.9% were from 45 to 64; and 15.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.3% male and 48.7% female.

There were 659 housing units at an average density of 370.9 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 98.78% White, 0.72% Native American, 0.22% from other races, and 0.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.50% of the population. There were 557 households out of which 36.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.4% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.9% were non-families. 25.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.96. In the city, the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 102.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.2 males. The median income for a household in the city was $40,789, and the median income for a family was $54,250. Males had a median income of $47,500 versus $21,364 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,726.
