Wamac, Illinois


Wamac is a city in Clinton, Marion, and Washington counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 1,185 at the 2010 census. Incorporated as a city on July 25, 1916, Wamac derives its name from the three counties.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,378 people, 568 households, and 369 families living in the city. The population density was 913.6 people per square mile. There were 646 housing units at an average density of 428.3 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 97.46% White, 1.52% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.07% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.67% of the population.
There were 568 households out of which 34.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.4% were married couples living together, 18.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city, the population was spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $26,149, and the median income for a family was $28,490. Males had a median income of $26,974 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,781. About 26.4% of families and 27.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 37.8% of those under age 18 and 7.3% of those age 65 or over.
