Walter de Caen
Walter de Caen, aka Walter de Cadomo, and, according to some histories, later as Walter de Kenson was born about 1025 AD. He was a kinsman of William the Conqueror and likely a kinsman of Rollo, the Viking adventurer who became the first ruler of Normandy. He moved from Normandy, France to England after The Battle of Hastings. It is widely believed he fought at the Battle of Hastings, although the original documents that would answer this definitely has been lost to antiquity.
Walter was awarded land in Yorkshire, England with a manor named Kengon. Walter became known as Walter de Kengon. The name evolved, through at least one line of descent, from "de Kengon" to "Dykenson", and eventually into the name "Dickinson". Nathaniel Dickinson, the notable American pioneer, is among his descendants.
