Via Rail Police Service

The Via Rail Police Service is the railroad police agency of the Canadian national passenger train operator Via Rail. The agency was formed in 2014 under the Railway Safety Act and the service's first appointed constable was a former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The service does not conduct its own investigations, instead assisting other police services with safety investigations related to Via Rail.

Authority

As indicated under the Railway Safety Act, VIA Rail Police were appointed by a Judge of a Superior Court for the enforcement of the laws of Canada and/or a province in so far as their enforcement relates to the protection of property owned, possessed or administered by VIA Rail Canada and for the protection of persons and property on their property.
