Velvet flycatcher


The velvet flycatcher is a species of bird in the family Monarchidae.
It is endemic to the Bismarck Archipelago.
Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Taxonomy and systematics

The velvet flycatcher was originally described in the genus Monarcha. Alternate names include dull flycatcher, dull monarch, Hartert's flycatcher, island flycatcher, lesser shining flycatcher, little shining flycatcher and velvet myiagra.

Subspecies

Three subspecies are recognized:
The velvet flycatcher is threatened by habitat loss due to logging.

Status

While the subspecies Monarcha hebetior eichhorni is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, the other two subspecies are considered Vulnerable by the IUCN.
