Uttam Neupane


Surya Kumar Neupane known professionally as Uttam Neupane, is a National Award winner Nepali sound mixer, sound editor and sound designer. He has worked on British, German and Nepali films. His two sound mixed films Bulbul and Talakjung vs Tulke were Nepal's official entries for the 92nd and 88th Academy Awards.

Notable works

Neupane collaborated with directors Bibhusan Basnet and Pooja Gurung on Dadyaa. In 2017 Dadyaa was nominated for Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and won a Special Jury Award. At the 73rd Venice International Film Festival in 2016 it was nominated for Best short film Venice horizons award, in 2017 at the Tehran short film festival it was nominated for Best Fiction International competition, and the Grand jury Prize Live Action short film AFI Fest in 2017. In 2016 Dadyaa was selected in the Toronto International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival. Neupane worked with CNN journalist Benjamin Best on his documentary film Dirty Games as a Location Sound Recordist and Production sound mixer. It won Feature Documentary, Award of Recognition at the Hollywood international independent documentary awards in 2016, Best Documentary at Snowdance Independent Film Festival, New York festivals.
Neupane is known for his work on Talakjung vs Tulke directed by Nischal Basnet, which was chosen as Nepal’s Official entry in best foreign language film category at the 88th Academy Awards. Neupane and Basnet Nischal have also collaborated on. Loot and Loot 2. He is also known for his work on Bulbul directed by Binod Poudel, which was selected as the Nepalese entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. Bulbul was nominated in 9th Saarc Film Festival] and won Special Jury Award. It premiered in June 2019 at the Nepal-America International Film Festival.
Neupane mixed sound on the first Nepali science fiction movie Bijuli Machine in 2016, directed by Navin Awal. Bijuli Machine was selected as an opening film at the 2017 Tasveer South Asian Film Festival, Seattle and won the best narrative film that year. It also screened at Singapore South Asian International Film Festival and was selected for the Chicago South Asian Film Festival.
Neupane collaborated with Iranian writer-director Fateme Ahmadi on her film Chandra supervised by Japanese film director Naomi Kawase. It was the winner of the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury for Radiance at Cannes Film Festival, received a Special Mention - Filmmakers of the Present for Tarachime at Locarno Film Festival in 2006. It was officially selected to screen at the Palm Springs Short Fest, Sao Paulo, Cork, Molodist, Flickers’ Rhode Island, London Short Film Festival and Open Doors Locarno.
