Ulpius Crinitus


Ulpius Crinitus is a person whose existence is doubted by most historians. If he did exist he would have been a Dux of the Illyrian and Thracian legions. Ulpius was born in the city of Italica, which is currently in Spain. Aurelian was his deputy. One time a group of Goths invaded Illyria and Thrace, Ulpius was ill at the time so he Aurelian to deal with the invasion. He made Aurelian the Legate of the Third Legion, commander of two thousand five hundred Auxiliaries, and four German Chieftains forces. Aurelian would defeat the barbarians in battle and use the reosources gained from the battles to enrich the provinces. After the battle Crinitus thanked Valerian, the emperor at the time, for providing him with such a talented deputy.Afterwards, Crinitus adopted Aurelian as his heir, either voluntarily or through force. Then he disappeared from history. Crinitus would also, at an unknown time, possibly become a Consul alongside Aurelian.A painting of Ulpius Crinitus alongside Aurelian has been found in the Temple of Sol.
