US Gorée


Union Sportive Gorée is a Senegalese football club based in Gorée Island east of the city centre of Dakar. They play in the top division in Senegalese football. Their home stadium is Stade Demba Diop. The team president is Augustin Senghor. The club has four championship and four cup titles.
Gorée also is fourth in the number of major honours won in Senegal numbering nine.

Logo and uniforms

Its logo features a light-blue coloured shield with the island coat-of-arms in the middle. Its uniform colours are light blue with the middle part white and white rims on its sleeves, its shorts and its stripes on its socks for home games, its away uniform is the opposite being white and black. Its third colour uniform are green with a light green part on the bottom, its shorts and socks are mostly light green and has red stripes on its sleeve and short rims and its socks.
Until mid-2017, its uniform colours were coloured aqua with white rims for home games and white clothing for away or alternative games.

History

The club was founded in 1933. In the colonial era, US Gorée would win the first French West African Cup title in 1947 and their very last in 1955. The club won their first championship title in 1978 and their last in 1984. Their first cup appearance was in 1965 and challenged against Olympique Thiès. In 1967 where US Gorée twice failed to win their second cup after they lost to Foyer France, a club now known as ASC Diaraf, their second was won in 1972 after defeating ASC Jeanne d'Arc 2-1. Their chance to win the third cup title failed in 1978 after being defeated by AS Police 3-0, fourteen years later, the club finally won their third cup title after defeating ASC Diaraf. Four years later, Gorée won their fourth and recent cup title after defeating Louga's ASEC Ndiambour 1-0. The 1998 cup edition was lost to ASC Yeggo 1-0, the 2001 cup was lost to SONACOS 1-0 in extra time, their recent cup appearance.
The club were relegated to Division 2 in 1992, 1996, 2002 and 2013. In recent years, US Gorée played in the second division and finished second behind ASEC Ndiambour and were in the qualification zone of entering Ligue 1. The club were in different positions in the 2015-16 season until the last few rounds when they were in the first place spot in Ligue 1, only have returned to Ligue 1 last season, the club claimed their fourth and recent national championship title. Gorée participated in their second straight Ligue 1 season, for most of the season, the club was in the last two places and after midway became another least successful season for the club and finished last place in the country and relegated and will appear in Ligue 2 next season.
The club first appeared in the League Cup in 2009, their greatest position was as finalist in the 2013 League Cup, there, the club lost in the penalty shoot to Casa Sport 3-1.
As champion, the club won their first Senegalese Super Cup and the Champion's Trophy for the 2016 season.
Gorée came back for another successful chance for the 2016-17 season which they later blew it and they were overthrown from further Ligue 1 participation in the following season by Teungueth and ASEC Ndiambour, whose result in the middle and the later part of the season were ups and downs within the relegation zone and under the 10th position, Gorée finished last for the season behind Linguère and both will appear in Ligue 2 in the following season.

African championships

Their first entry was in 1966 and entered not as a champion. Gorée never took part to challenge Kaloum Star as they withdrew. Their first appearance was in 1979 and first after winning the title in the previous season, they advanced as far as the semis and lost to Ghana's Hearts of Oak. In 1982, Gorée received their third entry after winning their second title, they never participated to face Gabon's Mbila Nzambi. Three years later after winning their recent title, Gorée again advanced all the way to the semis where they challenged from Stella Club d'Adjamé up to AS Bilima. It was 32 years until their next competition and the first being called CAF Champions League, their fifth and recent continental appearance which was in 2017, Gorée faced Guinea's Horoya AC, the home match was scoreless and lost the away match 1-2 and the club was out.
In cup competitions, their first was in 1976 and competed as second place and lost to Stella Club d'Adjamé, after winning their third cup title, Gorée again returned and first as cup winner and faced Ghana's Voradep and Tunisia's Stade Tunisien and advanced up to the second round. After Gorée won their fourth and last cup title, they competed in the 1997 edition and lost to MC Oran of Algeria in the first round. Their fifth appearance entered as a third-place club in 2007 and defeated two matches with NPA Anchors and Hassania Agadir from Morocco, the first leg had no goals, the club lost 3-2 in Agadir thus Gorée advanced as far to the first round.
