Tramway Museum Society of Victoria


The Tramway Museum Society of Victoria was founded in 1962 with the aim of establishing an operational tramway museum. In 1970 the Bylands station on the closed Heathcote railway line was leased, being purchased outright in the mid-1980s. A lease was taken on the rail reserve from the end of the museum site to the outskirts of Kilmore in 1991.
The museum houses a large and varied collection of trams from Melbourne, Ballarat, Geelong and Adelaide, as well as preserved buses and other work vehicles. The museum has of electric track, which was previously a part of the Heathcote Junction to Bendigo railway line.
The Tramway Heritage Centre also has a tramway electric supply substation, two running sheds, an exhibition shed/workshop - that was used as part of the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880 - various buildings for the storage of unrestored trams, cable tram cars and motor vehicles and a visitor centre.
