Torricella-Taverne


Torricella-Taverne is a municipality in the district of Lugano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

Geography

Torricella-Taverne has an area,, of. Of this area, or 15.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while or 68.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, or 18.1% is settled, or 0.6% is either rivers or lakes and or 2.7% is unproductive land.
Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 2.9% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 9.5% and transportation infrastructure made up 4.6%. Out of the forested land, 63.5% of the total land area is heavily forested and 3.6% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 5.2% is used for growing crops and 9.5% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is flowing water.

Most of the population speaks Italian, with German being second most common and French being third. Of the Swiss national languages, 184 speak German, 46 people speak French, 2,331 people speak Italian, and 8 people speak Romansh. The remainder speak another language.

Politics

In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the FDP which received 25.46% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the CVP, the Ticino League and the SP. In the federal election, a total of 822 votes were cast, and the voter turnout was 49.4%.
In the Gran Consiglio election, there were a total of 1,651 registered voters in Torricella-Taverne, of which 1,015 or 61.5% voted. 14 blank ballots and 1 null ballot were cast, leaving 1,000 valid ballots in the election. The most popular party was the PLRT which received 264 or 26.4% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were; the SSI, the PPD+GenGiova and the LEGA.
In the Consiglio di Stato election, 12 blank ballots and 6 null ballots were cast, leaving 997 valid ballots in the election. The most popular party was the PLRT which received 238 or 23.9% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were; the LEGA, the PS and the PPD.

The primary school program lasts for five years and includes both a standard school and a special school. In the municipality, 180 students attended the standard primary schools and 6 students attended the special school. In the lower secondary school system, students either attend a two-year middle school followed by a two-year pre-apprenticeship or they attend a four-year program to prepare for higher education. The upper secondary school includes several options, but at the end of the upper secondary program, a student will be prepared to enter a trade or to continue on to a university or college.
