The Meadows Greyhounds


The Meadows Greyhounds is a Greyhound Racing Track and is located in Broadmeadows, Victoria. The Meadows is one of Two Metropolitan Tracks located Victoria. The Meadows is one of 13 Greyhound Tracks located in Victoria. The Meadows races every Saturday Night and Wednesday Day Meetings.

History

The Meadows Greyhound Racing Club was founded in 1955. MGRA conducted their first races at the Maribrynong track by leasing it for £100 per week. In 1957, MGRA was allowed to relocate to the North Melbourne Greyhound Track. Racing was conducted with a tin hare. The First Australian Cup was held on the 31st of March 1958 and was won by champion greyhound, Rookie Rebel. The Last Race meeting held at the North Melbourne Track was on April 16, 1962. The MGRA had recently converted the second oval at Olympic Park to a greyhound Track. In 1994, The Domain Tunnel project was proposed to go through the back straight of the Olympic Park track. The MGRA ended up receiving compensation from Citilink to relocate the track to the Broadmeadows site where it is now.

Track Distances and Spefications

The Meadows Track is a circle track and has three distances that greyhounds race from. The track from post to post is 450 meters. Greyhounds Race from 525 meters, 600 meters and 725 meters.

The Meadows holds many feature races on their race calendar, including 9 group 1's a year. The biggest event is the Australian Cup which is worth $250000 to the winner.
