The George Marshall Cup
The George Marshall Cup is the main and oldest cricket cup competition in Lincolnshire.
The tournament was introduced in 1970 by the Lincolnshire County Cricket League so that the league, that had just expanded to 3 divisions could have a county wide knockout competition. Up to 1970 clubs did play knockout cricket but this was mainly in other county competitions such as the Yorkshire Council Championships, with records showing Scunthorpe entering a team in that competition as far back as 1948.
The competition is open to any clubs affiliated with the Lincolnshire cricket league. Since the introduction of the ECB premier leagues in 1999 teams that have a 1st XI in that league can only enter their 2nd XI into the George Marshall cup. The competition is 45 overs throughout with each bowler only allowed to bowl 9 overs, this means clubs need 5 bowlers in their side which differed a lot from the league rules.
The competition has also awarded a man of the match award for the best performance in the final since its introduction.
