Sydney Sweeney is an American actress. She appeared in the Netflix series Everything Sucks! and has taken on recurring roles in the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale and the HBO miniseries Sharp Objects. In 2019, she began starring in the HBO teen drama seriesEuphoria. In film, she had a small role in Quentin Tarantino's 2019 comedy-drama Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, portraying a member of the Manson Family.
Early life
Sweeney was born and raised in Spokane, Washington. She has a younger brother named Trent. Her mother is a lawyer and her father is in the medical field. She gained an interest in acting after wanting to audition for a role in an indie movie that had come to her town. In order to convince her parents, she presented them a five-year business plan. They agreed and shortly after they moved to Los Angeles.
Career
Sweeney has guest starred in TV shows such as 90210, Criminal Minds, Grey's Anatomy, In the Vault, and Pretty Little Liars. Sweeney starred as Emaline Addario on the Netflix series Everything Sucks!, which revolved around two groups of students during high school in Oregon in 1996. She then appeared in the HBO miniseries Sharp Objects in which she starred as Alice, a roommate whom Amy Adams' character meets at a psychiatric facility. Her character was originally supposed to have a smaller role, but the director kept bringing her in for more scenes. For the role, Sweeney studied stories of girls who suffered from mental illness and self-harming, and visited hospitals who had patients who self-harmed. Sweeney filmed Everything Sucks! and Sharp Objects concurrently, filming the former during the week and latter on the weekend. Sweeney had a recurring role in the second season of the Hulu original seriesThe Handmaid's Tale as Eden Spencer, a pious and obedient girl. She also starred in the A24 thriller Under the Silver Lake in 2018. In June 2018, it was announced that Sweeney would be starring alongside Zendaya in the HBO seriesEuphoria as Cassie Howard. The series premiered on June 16, 2019. In August 2018, it was announced that Sweeney would appear in Quentin Tarantino's film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The film was released in the United States on July 26, 2019. She will also be seen in the upcoming drama Clementine. Sydney will play Lana, a rebellious young woman who begins a complex relationship with the main character, Karen. She will also star in the film Big Time Adolescence directed by Jason Orley. Sweeney's character is Holly, a young girl who acts older than she really is. She is also starring in the upcoming horror filmTell Me Your Name. In September 2019, it was announced that Sweeney would star in the Blumhouse TV filmNocturne alongside actress Madison Iseman. Personal life
Sweeney currently studies entrepreneurship. She is also a trained MMA fighter and competed in grappling in high school. Sweeney frequently talks about creating separate books for each of her characters, which are "interactive diaries/timelines/memory books/pictures of the character’s entire world" from when the character was born to the first page of the script.
