Surender Sharma


Surender Sharma is an Indian poet, writer and humorist from India. He often writes and performs comic sketches of himself and his wife and known for his refrain chaar lainaa suna raha hoon in Haryanavi dialect. Sharma is known for his contribution to Haryanvi and Hindi comic poetry. He was honoured by the Government of India in 2013, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award for his contributions to the field of literature.
In October 2018, he was appointed as the Vice-Chairman of Hindi Academy, Government of Delhi, succeeded by Vishnu Khare. Previously, he held the position of vice-president of Haryana Sahitya Academy, which is run under Haryana government. He is also a member of the Central Board of Film Certification.

Early life and career

Surender Sharma was born into a Brahmin family in Haryana. He hails from a village Nangal Choudhary of Mahendragarh district, Haryana. He holds a degree in Commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce of Delhi University.
In an interview with Mid Day, Sharma said, he started performing poetry in 1966 when he was in college, but, started doing it professionally since the 1970s. He uses Marwari and Haryanavi dialect for his humour.
He is famous for starting most of his poems with a refrain, Chaar Lainaa Suna Ryo Hoon in Haryanvi dialect. He is credited for establishing the tradition of Hāsya Rāsa among Kavi Sammelan industry in India.
In 1980, the T-series released a cassette named Chaar Laina Kavi.
In 2004, he hosted his own daily radio show, Sharmaji Se Poocho, which used to air on Red FM 93.5. His program 'Sharma Ji Se Ask' was very popular among listeners for many years on Big FM.
In 2018, Surender Sharma was appointed as the vice president of Hindi Academy, an autonomous organization works for the promotion of Hindi language and literature, run under the Government of Delhi.
The satirical writings of Surender Sharma are compiled in four books, which include Buddhimaanon Ki Moorkhtaaein, Mansarovar Ke Kauwe, Bade-Badon Ke Utpaat and Mujhse Bhala Na Koy. In the nineties, he edited three poetry collections under the title Ras Kalash.

Social work

Surendra Sharma has been active in many social and literary institutions. He has been holding the post of Vice President in the Haryana Sahitya Akademi run under the Haryana Government and the Hindi Academy of the Government of Delhi. He has also been a member of the Board of Film Certification along with membership of Hindi Advisory Committees in various ministries of the Government of India. He serves as a trustee and vice president for the Bhagwan Parshuram Institute of Technology.

Published work

In 2013, the Government of India conferred him with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India. He is also a recipient of Kaka Hathrasi Hasya Samman and Manhar Thahaka Award.
