Stornoway Town Hall
Stornoway Town Hall is a former municipal building in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. It is a Category B listed building.History
The building, which was designed by John Robertson of Inverness in the Gothic Revival style, was opened by the Earl of Rosebery in September 1905. After the original structure was gutted by fire in 1918, it was rebuilt in the same style and re-opened by Thomas Bassett Macaulay, the President of the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada in 1929.
The clock tower on the building gained some fame from the Calum Kennedy song Lovely Stornoway in the 1960s.
The building was the headquarters of Stornoway Town Council until it was absorbed into Comhairle nan Eilean Siar in 1975. The building was then used as the home of the arts centre, An Lanntair, until 2005 when the centre moved to a purpose-built facility on the sea front. The town hall was then extensively refurbished at a cost of £2.1 million and re-opened for community use in 2012.
