Stockton Plateau Hydro Project

The Stockton Plateau Hydro Project is a proposed hydroelectric power station planned on the Ngakawau River in the northern section of the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
The project is being developed by Hydro Developments Limited, who applied for resource consents in December 2008 with consents granted in January 2010.
Some of the water used will be drained from the Stockton coal mine which is expected to reduce the pollution levels in the Ngakawau River.
In October 2010, Hydro Developments Limited and Solid Energy announced that they had reached an agreement on using water from the Stockton plateau for hydro-electricity and that both parties would abandon their respective Environment Court appeals of the others scheme. This agreement represented a "green light" for Hydro Developments Limited's power scheme using polluted water from the Stockton open cast mine in Buller.
