Steve True


Steve True, nicknamed Steve "The Homer" True, is an American sportscaster for the ESPN Wisconsin radio station WAUK 540 AM in Milwaukee.

Early life

True attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the University of Arizona, and Indiana University South Bend. He played tennis at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He returned to South Bend to finish his accounting degree at the Indiana University South Bend. While in South Bend, he was a leading coach of local boys tennis teams. After attending Midwestern Broadcast College, in Chicago, Illinois, he got into radio.

Career

True is an on-air personality with previous experience at numerous radio stations, including WIXK in New Richmond, Wisconsin, KCOW in Alliance, Nebraska, WIBA-FM in Madison, Wisconsin, WTDY in Madison, and WISN.
He joined Good Karma Broadcasting in September 2005 as the host of the afternoon show on WAUK 540. He has been a sportscaster in Milwaukee since 1989 and is in his 20th season as play-by-play voice of Marquette basketball. He started at WISN radio as the morning sports anchor, host of a nightly sports show, "The World's Greatest Sportstalk Show", and play-by-play voice for Marquette basketball. In 1991, he joined WISN-TV as the morning sports anchor and eventually became the 5 pm sports anchor. He won an Emmy for local sportscasting in 1996. He also hosted "Pack Attack", a live weekly show that featured Packers players including Brett Favre. He worked at WISN-TV from 1991 to 2003.
True is currently the co-host of ESPN Wisconsin's "Homer & Gabe" alongside co-host Gabe Neitzel. Monday through Friday "Homer & Gabe" are on the air from 3 pm to 6 pm CTS and are also available in a daily podcast. He hosts the Green Bay Packers post game reaction show "Pack Attack" after every Packer game. It features post game reactions as well as guests and interviews, and welcomes input from callers. He also appears on other ESPN Wisconsin shows such as "Wilde & Tausch" to provide comment and views. True often focuses on Twitter polls to engage listeners and is always in search of popular subjects to hit the magic 600+ votes. He is known for focusing on creating and using humorous nicknames for his co-workers.

Marquette University men's basketball play-by-play

True is the play-by-play announcer for the Marquette Golden Eagles men's basketball team. He started announcing Marquette games in 1993. He gives the Marquette players nicknames that match their playing style and life stories. "Oh Baby" is his trademark saying.

Charitable works

True is known in the Milwaukee area for his charitable works, emceeing events throughout the year. He is involved in the MACC Fund, religious charities associated with Marquette University as well as other religious schools and programs.

Personal life

After being involved in a car accident on his birthday, November 13, 2013 in Milwaukee, True was in critical condition, but made a full recovery.
