Stanislav Pozdnyakov


Stanislav Alekseyevich Pozdnyakov is a Russian fencer, who has won five Olympic medals in the sabre competitions. He also won the gold medal at the 2006 World Fencing Championships and the 2007 World Fencing Championships in the individual sabre as well as a bronze medal in the team sabre in 2006.
His daughter Sofia Pozdniakova is also a fencer.

Career

Pozdnyakov won the World Fencing Championships ten times; five times in the team event and five times in the individual event, more than any other sabre fencer in history. He also has won five silver and two bronze medals at the World Championships.
Pozdnyakov is also one of the most successful Olympic fencers. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, as a member of the Soviet team took gold. In 1996, as team captain, he won gold in the team and the individual event. His last Olympic gold medal was at the 2000 Olympics, in the team event. At the 2004 Olympics, his team beat the team USA 45-44 to win the bronze medal. Four years later, at the 2008 Summer Olympics, the Russian team lost in the semi-finals to the United States 45–44.
After retiring from competitive fencing Pozdnyakov serves as official of the International Fencing Federation.
Since May 2018 Pozdnyakov serves as the President of the Russian Olympic Committee.
