Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering


Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering or SCT College of Engineering is a state-government-sponsored engineering college in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. It was established by the Government of Kerala in the year 1995. Since its inception, the college has been retaining the privilege of being one of the top engineering colleges in Kerala.
In 2006 Outlook magazine gave it a rank of 98 in its list of Top 100 Engineering Colleges of India, and it is one of the top 3 Engineering colleges in Kerala. It is one of three engineering colleges from the state of Kerala to appear on the list. In 2011 WEEK survey, it was ranked 65th in the list of top 100 engineering colleges in India.

History

Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram was established by the Government of Kerala in the year 1995 in memoriam of the Maharaja of Travancore Sree Chitra Thirunal Balarama Varma and is affiliated to the University of Kerala, with All India Council for Technical Education approval. With just around ten engineering colleges functioning in Kerala during 90s, there was an urge to set up another institution, under the control of the Government of Kerala, to nurture top quality engineers in the State. It was established at a time when need for quality engineers was an urge in the society. It is the first college in South India to offer a B. Tech programme in Automobile Engineering. It is one of the few colleges that got accredited in early 2000 itself.

Administration

The governing body of the college is constituted by the Government of Kerala and is chaired by the Minister for Transport, Higher Education Secretary, Finance Secretary, Transport Secretary and Managing Director, KSRTC as ex officio members. Two other members are nominated by the chairman.
Established under the University of Kerala in 1995, with AICTE approval, it is a college accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi, and Certification. SCTCE is one of the seven colleges in the state of Kerala aided under the World Bank funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme.
Extensive links with research institutes and industries has enabled SCT to maintain the vocational and practical relevance of its courses.

Location

The college is in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala and is situated at Pappanamcode, on the side of Trivandrum – Kanyakumari NH-47 highway, 5 km from Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station and Trivandrum Central Bus Station and about 12 km from the Trivandrum International Airport. It is easily accessible by road from any part of Trivandrum.

There has been a governing body decision to start an undergraduate program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and graduate programs in six areas. The AICTE sanctioned M.Tech degree program in Machine Design by Mechanical Engineering Department started in 2009 with a single batch of students. AICTE also approved M.Tech degree program for Computer Science in 2010 with a single batch of students. AICTE has sanctioned M.Tech degree program in Signal Processing by Electronics and Communication Engineering Department in 2011 with a single batch of students. A new M.Tech course on Vehicle Design and Road safety will be started shortly after getting AICTE approval.
The TEQIP program of the Government of India has brought changes in the quality of training offered by the college with the coming up of a Central Computing facility and digital library.tc. The college conducts community development programs related to skill development and women empowerment.

Admission

The admission procedure and fee structure of SCT College of Engineering is decided by the Government of Kerala. The details are given in the admission prospectus published by Kerala State Entrance Commissioner and can be found under Government self-financing colleges category. A small percentage of seats are reserved for the children of KSRTC employees and Non-Resident Indians. All admissions except under the NRI quota are based on the Common Entrance Examination conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala.

SCTCE had the privilege of being one of the top seven colleges in the state aided under the World Bank funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Program -phase I of the Government of India. The college was Ranked as one among the top engineering colleges in India in many national surveys conducted by media such as OUTLOOK, THE WEEK etc. It is the first ISO certified Engineering College in the Self Financing Sector. SCTCE is the only engineering college selected for bus body testing and certification centre by Govt. of Kerala in association with KSRTC as per AIS 52 standards. Many innovative projects by students have been adjudged as best at various levels –one in Limca Books of world records.

Faculty

Apart from experienced senior faculty, SCT College of Engineering has a large number of young faculty members who have received their education/training from India's premier institutes. Usually the recruitment is done by a selection test to the post of Assistant Professor. The test is conducted by a Kerala Government agency.
The college staff association, SCT College of Engineering Staff Association, comprises all staff and faculty.

Industry-institute interaction

The college has an industry institute partnership cell which conducts training and education programs for the benefit of public and students. It helps the students take up the challenge of solving the problems faced by industry, by doing their final year projects with them. There is a Research and Consultancy wing.

Student life

Most of the students are day-scholars. The students from far away places reside in college-approved hostels near the campus.There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls.
There are many cultural and technical festivals conducted by various departments' clubs. The annual Techno-cultural fest of the college,'Cult A Way', is one of the top fests in South India.It usually sees a huge footfall every year and has a wide spectrum of events.There are special events like Demo Week, where the final year students dress up according to several themes.
The college has student associations, with each branch having its own association. They organize seminars, contests, and cultural events.
The college has a National Service Scheme unit, film club, nature club, tech club, and arts club.
The first college-level road safety club in the state was formed at Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering in association with the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department.

Cult a Way

Cult a Way is the annual technical and cultural festival of SCT. It was started in 2011 and took off rapidly to become one of the major college fests in Kerala. It is a four- or five-day event and almost all colleges in the state participate. The events includes technical workshops and cultural events like dance programs, treasure hunt, quizzes, fashion shows, etc. The proshows organised as part of Cult a Way attracts students and others in large numbers. The proshows mark the culmination of the festival which is a heartthrob among the younger generations of the state.Vishal Dadlani, Sonu Kakkar,Jonita Gandhi,Rasika Shekhar, Lucky Ali,Brodha V,The Local Train, When Chai Met Toast, Divine Connection etc are some amongst those who've done gigs at Cult a Way. CAW is also famous for hosting IDonate, a limca record breaking event during the 2014 edition. The event broke the then existing record for highest number of students pledging to donate their eyes.

AutoBahn

AutoBahn is a two- to three-day long technical festival conducted by the students of SCTCE. The festival has auto shows, seminars and other events. Contests involving automobiles are also conducted, bringing a large number of participants. The festival is held with the support of the Motor Vehicles Department of the Government of Kerala.
The festival is normally conducted as a part of Cult A Way, the inter-college festival of Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering. In the 2013 edition of Autobahn India's top stunt riding team GhostRyderZ was a huge success with an audience of over 5000 people and over 10000 tickets were sold. In the following year the Stunt Show performance of Rafal Pasierbek the then world-acclaimed stuntrider was attended by more than 6000 people.

Centre for Continuing Education

The Continuing Education Centre runs training programs for engineering college teachers. The centre conducts skill oriented training programs for the general public.

Flexibility in programs

The syllabus and academic guidelines issued by University of Kerala are followed. However, the college has a wide range of electives offered for its students, for example, e-commerce, vehicle design, aerospace engineering, aviation electronics, neural networks, mechatronics, fuzzy logic, image processing and optoelectronics. It is the second engineering college in Kerala to have a mechatronics lab after the National Institute of Technology Calicut.
