Sir Abdool Raman Osman State College


Sir Abdool Raman Osman State College is an elite secondary school in Phoenix, Mauritius. It was founded in 1996 as the Royal College of Phoenix and was renamed in late 1996 after Sir Abdool Raman Osman, the first Governor-General of Mauritius. The school became a National College in 2007.
SARO SC is among the best schools across the country, admitting only students having achieved excellent results in the CPE examinations, and preparing them for the University of Cambridge O Level and A Level. To date, it is the only school in Mauritius to have ever produced a recipient of the from the University of Toronto and is the first school in the history of the country to have had a Computer Science Laureate.
The school's graduates have gone on to pursue further studies in various fields, ranging from STEM to Humanities, at prestigious universities across the globe: in Canada, Germany, France, UK, USA, Australia, Netherlands, Malaysia, China, India, South Africa, as well as Mauritius.

History

The school welcomed its first batch in 1996. Following that, more blocks were added and by the end of 1997, the school became a complex with a ground area of. It was converted into a Form Six school in 2002. In January 2006, consequent to a policy decision of the government, the school again started admitting pupils in Form 1. End of year 2007, the school became a National College and changed its name from Sir Abdool Raman Osman State Secondary School to Sir Abdool Raman Osman State College.
With a major change in the educational system of Mauritius, SARO SC is projected to become an Academy in 2021.
Three editions of the school magazine were launched in 2009, 2011 and 2013 respectively. A 2016 edition was written but, subsequent to multiple changes in administration, remained unreleased.

Overview

Uniform

The school uniform consists of a gold/cream shirt with blue trousers.
The 1st edition of the polo shirt had a wolf design at the back and the 2nd had a school shield design with a cream colour.

To date, SARO has fostered 4 Laureates and numerous other scholarship awardees.
Exceptionally, it is the only school in Mauritius to have ever produced a recipient of the from the University of Toronto and, following a brilliant performance of the Class of 2016, became the first school in the history of the country to have produced a Computer Science Laureate.

Model United Nations Conferences

SARO SC is reputed for consistently displaying an outstanding performance at Model UN Conferences.
Most notably, the school has consistently ranked 1st in the Zone 4 and been in the top 3 in the national variant since the 2015 edition.
Every year, the Government of Mauritius selects 6 students from the ~30 National Best Delegates to attend a university-level International Model UN Conference. To date, SARO SC has sent 2 such students, one in 2015 and one in 2018.

2014 Football Campaign

The school participated in the football tournament organised by the MBC in 2014 and had a very successful campaign. After beating the Collège du Saint-Esprit in the first round, SARO SC qualified for the quarter-finals against the New Eton College and came out victorious after penalty shootouts. Following a close win against rivals and neighbours Phoenix SSS in the semi-finals, the school made it to the regional final against the St. Andrew's School of Rose-Hill, whereby the Sarosian team lost.
