Shire Hall, Cambridge

Shire Hall is a municipal building at Castle Hill in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.

History

In the early 20th century County Hall in Hobson Street had been the local facility for dispensing justice and the meeting place of Cambridgeshire County Council. However, after the Hobson Street building proved to be too small, the County Council decided to erect a new building on the site of a former 19th century prison adjacent to Castle Hill. The new building, which was designed by Herbert Henry Dunn in the Neo-Georgian style, was completed in 1933. In 2018 the County Council announced plans to move to a smaller purpose-built facility at Alconbury.
