Shelling of Cai Lay schoolyard

The shelling was an attack on a Cai Lậy District government-controlled schoolyard in South Vietnam on 30 August 1973, by attacking Vietcong troops. The shelling was centered on the districts of Cái Bè and Cai Lậy, areas of traditional VC control in Định Tường Province in the northern delta.
The shelling came about during a skirmish between attacking VC forces and militias defending the district.
The South Vietnamese command reported that three government soldiers were killed and twenty soldiers and civilians were wounded in the attack, with 120 mortar and artillery rounds being fired. In a related incident, VC troops shelled a militia post away from Cai Lậy, following this up with a ground attack during which four militiamen were killed and eleven wounded. It is not known whether the VC suffered casualties.
