Schmitt or von Schmitt is a Bavarian noble family introduced by Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria

History

The first known ancestor was Johannes Kaspar I. Schmitt who was from Bamberg in Germany. His descendants Josef von Schmitt, as well as his brother received German nobility, and were elevated to a German noble family, Josef von Schmitt and :de:Gottfried Schmitt|Gottfried von Schmitt, were elevated to the hereditary title of Ritter, roughly equivalent to the British Baronet, in 1889 and 1896 respectively.
Another notable family member was Ritter Josef Schmitt, Bavarian privy councilor. Alongside :de:Gottfried Schmitt |Gottfried Schmitt, a German politician and member of the :de:Reichsgerichtsrat|Reichsgerichtsrat.
