Samaj Ko Badal Dalo
Samaj Ko Badal Dalo is a 1970 Bollywood drama film directed by V. Madhusudhan Rao. The film stars Ajay Sahni, Sharada, Pran, Kanhaiyalal, Prem Chopra, Mukri, Kanchana, Dhumal, Aruna Irani. It is a remake of the Malayalam film Thulabharam.
Plot
The film by Gemini, starts with a court scene in which a women is held for a heinous crime, prosecuted by a female public prosecutor & recommended for a death penalty to the Court. When asked by the Judge for any final representation, the women narrates why & what made her commit the heinous crime.Chaya is the only daughter of Nasir Husain who is a partner of Mill with Pran. Chaya is in friendship with Prem Chopra who is a Manager of the Mill. Kanchana is the daughter of Kanhyya Lal who is the private advocate on the Company. One day Parikshit Sahni alongwith few of his mazdoor colleagues of the Mill reaches Nasir Husain requesting timely payment of Bonus prior to Diwali. The pass-on request of Nasir Husain as partner to Pran falls on his deaf ear and finally a refusal to the proposal by Pran. Pran intendes a huge profit & asks to ignore the demand of workers which is indigestible to Nasir Husain. An heated argument between them results in break up of the partnership however as a revenge of argument Pran deceives Nasir Husain cunningly with the help of his private advocate & grabs all of his property in addition. Homeless, Nasir Husain unable to sustain the shock dies of heart attack leaving Chaya his daughter alone in the world. Initially Chaya seeks shelter to Kanchana which receives a regret by her on the grounds of her father Kanhayya Lal. A request to Prem Chopra to have a shelter in his home also receives a rejection from him on some reasons asking her to forget friendships of College days. In fact Prem Chopra had find her pennyless. Parikshit Sahni the young Union Leader offers Chaya his cottage as shelter & requests her to stay with him & his old & poor mother. Though hesitant initially, the poor mother welcomes both under such critical condition. Mehmood & Aruna Irani shown as roadside lifters / pick-pocketers. Prakash enlightens both & then Mehmood joins the Mill as a worker. Prakash & Chaya continue their stay happily in the cottage and gradually become parents of three kids. Prakash's old mother takes care of the kids.
One day Pran inaugurates a modern machine in the Mill & declares sacking of 400 Mill workers out of 1500 on strength to which Parikshit Sahani opposes. During negotiations Prem Chopra, the Manager slaps Prakash but matter is halted by Police intervention. All the mazdoors under the leadership of Prakash decides to go on hunger strike & wins by interception by Govt to run the Mill. However, Pran quickly approaches court & brings a Stay Order. Mill workers on strike, start starving. When Pran finds the Mill workers unmanageable at the Mill gate, calls Police for protection & on the other hand pays money to his goons to finish Prakash. Ajay falls prey to the goons on a dark evening in a narrow lane & dies. Chaya in search of a job fails to get any & situation worsens when her mother-in law is taken away by her brother to his house & locks her, with a malicious intention of grabbing the cottage in future. Prakash & Chaya’s children then start suffering for want of food & comes on the road, desperately. When Chaya comes to know that her children are begging on streets, she tries to divert them but hunger makes the children unstoppable. Vendors cheat children for just a fistful of food in exchange of goods, value of which they are unaware. Next, a snack shop owner behaves cruelly with the hungry small children, under the pretext of theft of snacks by burning the hand of the elder girl by a hot rod from a boiling oil.
Again comes the court scene on the screen with Chaya in the witness box, depicting the whole story & reasons of committing the heinous crime. Why Kanchana the female public prosecutor is so angry on Chaya to recommend death penalty on her ? Did Chaya poinsed Kanchana's father Kanhayalal, the Company Advocate ? Did Chaya slit the neck of the goon who stabbed her husband ? Did Chaya murdered Pran at the hands of Mill workers ? Did Chaya burnt alive the Snack Shop owner ? After narration of life story, Chaya collapses in the witness box & later dies in the custody. After finding the injustice with Chaya, the female public prosecutor Kanchana, who remains close witness to the entire life of Chaya becomes disgusted over the trial & becomes very uncomfortable & restless. She then demands to the court to re-run the case, stating not alone Chaya but the people involved in this case in fact should be held guilty & punished. At the same time she helds the whole Society in general as responsible for such incidences and asks to held it too, guilty. Kanchana demands to the Court to bring a change in the attitude of Society by shouting the slogan, which is the title of the film SAMAJ KO BADAL DALO.
