Salindeg

Barangay Salindeg is one of the 39 barangays of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. It is known for their big, juicy Singkamas that farmers grow and sell them to commercial and public markets.

History

During the early Spanish period, Salindeg was still accessible by water as there was a big river near the place.
One day while the Spanish Civil Guards were patrolling they came upon a woman who was catching shrimps, crabs and shells in the shallow portion of the river. It was the first time the woman saw white men and she was scared especially when they asked a question which she did not understand. As she was extremely nervous she just uttered things which are translated as follows: "Sali is my name sir, and these are leddeg". "Leddeg is a kind of shell which is abundant in bodies of water that are not very salty. "Salin-en-eg, senorita, eh!", the Civil Guards quoted.
Since then the Spaniards called the place Salindeg, however some Ilocano old men say that "Salindeg" also means orderliness arising from a peaceful situation.
