Riedern


Riedern is a former municipality in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland. Effective from 1 January 2011, Riedern is part of the municipality of Glarus.

History

Riedern is first mentioned in 1350 as Riedern.

Geography

Riedern has an area,, of. Of this area, 23.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 53.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 13.2% is settled and the remainder is non-productive.
Riedern is at the entrance to the Klöntal and is north-west of Glarus.

Demographics

Riedern had a population of 734. , 16.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 13.8%. Most of the population speaks German , with Italian being second most common and Turkish being third.
In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the SPS which received 49% of the vote. Most of the rest of the votes went to the SVP with 39.6% of the vote.
About 62.4% of the population have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education.
