Proviantgården


Proviantgården or Provianthuset is a historic building on Slotsholmen in Copenhagen, Denmark.

History

Proviantgården was built as part of Christian IV's Arsenal Dock which made it easy to preparenaval ships for. The building was constructed between 1602 and 1609. It was hit by first in 1626 and again in 1719. The naval dock was decommissioned filled in the 1860s. In 1992 the building was hit by a third fire.

Building

The building is 163 metres long and two storeys high. Only the robust brick walls survive of the original building. A passageway, Proviantpassagen, runs between the west side of the building and the wall that surrounds the Royal Library Garden, linking Rigsdagsgården with the Christians Brygge waterfront. The building is listed.

Current use

The building is now used by Folketinget's administration and also contains offices for MPs as well as reading rooms for the National Archives.
