Reactions
As a vicinal-diol, it can rearrange to pinacolone by the pinacol rearrangement, e.g. by heating with sulfuric acid:
Pinacol can be used with borane and boron trichloride to produce useful synthetic intermediates such as pinacolborane, bisdiboron, and pinacolchloroborane.
