Born in Poole, Dorset, England, Joyce gained a Diploma in Art and Design in 1982 from the Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design. Then he went on to the Stourbridge College of Technology and Art where he took a BA Degree in Fine Art and History of Art, graduating in 1985. Since then he has had solo and mixed exhibitions in London, the U.S. and Europe. He also went on to teach at The Arts Institute at Bournemouth. He was the President of the Bournemouth Arts Club from 1998-2008. He divides his time between homes and studios in South Dorset and Bouin, Vendée.

Artistic style and practice

Lapada describes Joyce's work as being 'intimately related to the man-altered landscape of La Vendée'. Joyce says that his work 'could be described as abstracted from landscape.'
Joyce paints using acrylic paint on canvases of varying sizes and uses brushes, knives and other tools to achieve the scraped, rubbed and scratched effects of his paintings. Wall Street International has said that Joyce's methods create 'complicated yet enchanting surfaces.'
