Oshnavieh


Oshnavieh is a town in West Azerbaijan Province, Iran & the capital of Oshnavieh County. At the 2016 census, its population was 40,000 in 2000 families.
Oshnavieh is bordered by Naqadeh to the east, by Piranshahr to the south, by Urmia to the north and by Iraqi Kurdistan to the west.
The spoken language in the town is Kurdish, while the official language in schools and offices is Persian.

Iran-Iraq war

At the time of Iran-Iraq war, Ba'athist Iraq regime bombed some localities of Oshnavieh in the province of West Azerbaijan --on 2 August 1988-- by applying chemical bombs against them; and as a consequence of those attacks, approximate 2700 persons were injured.
