Orlandina Basket

Orlandina Basket, known as Benfapp Capo d'Orlando for sponsorship reasons, is an Italian professional basketball club that is based in Capo d'Orlando, Sicily. It plays in the second tier Serie A2 Basket, as it relegated from the LBA in 2018.

History

Founded in 1978, the side mostly played in the regional leagues until coming under new ownership in 1996. Following this, Orlandina Basket obtained two consecutive promotions to reach the Serie B2 in 1998. Signing Italian international :it:Alessandro_Fantozzi|Alessandro Fantozzi the same year, the club moved up to the Serie B1 in 2000 and the LegaDue the next year, though they were relegated after one season.
Readmitted to the LegaDue in 2004 when the league needed to fill spaces, the side won the league to earn a promotion to the top-tier Serie A in 2005.
In September 2008, Orlandina Basket was excluded from the Serie A along with Basket Napoli due to legal problems. After this decision, the team restarted to play in Serie C Dilettanti, the fifth highest basketball league in Italy. The side moved up the divisions, and went from the DNA, to the LegaDue in 2012. Despite losing the playoff final against Aquila Basket Trento, in 2013–14, Orlandina Basket was promoted to the Serie A, after Montepaschi Siena went bankrupt.
On May 12, 2017, Orlandina won its first LBA play-off game, with an 80–87 road victory over Olimpia Milano. The following season, Orlandina played in European competitions as it qualified for the Basketball Champions League for the 2017–18 season. After defeating Academic Sofia in the qualifying round, the team advanced to the regular season where it finished last in its group. The same season, the club relegated to the Serie A2, after finishing in the fourteenth and last placed in the LBA season.
