Oecusse Airport


Oecusse International Airport or the Rota do Sandalo International Airport is an international airport located in the village of Palaban near Pante Macassar, the capital of the East Timorese Oecusse Special Administrative Region. The new airport was inaugurated on 18 June 2019 and was built next to the original landing strip.

Facilities

This new airport complies with the applicable international standards of ICAO and IATA in terms of safety, security and comfort of usage. It was designed to handle unrestricted operation of Airbus A320 or Boeing B737-800 aircraft, day and night. The airport also has facilities for the processing of cargo and live animals, including quarantine services.
This airport has a runway of 2200 meters in length and 45 meters in width and a parking area with capacity for seven aircraft of various types simultaneously. It is capable of processing more than 500 passengers per hour between departures and arrivals when in full operation. It also has automatic emergency power generation systems, modern firefighting equipment and ground support equipment for aircraft support, automatic meteorological information system and a control tower with modern and complete communication systems.

History

The development of the new international airport was carried out by Indonesian giant contractor PT Wijaya Karya with ISQ acting as a project consultant. The cost of the new airport was US$119 million.
On 18 June 2019, the airport was inaugurated by East Timor President Francisco Guterres. Also present at the ceremony were the President of the Oecusse Special Administrative Region Mari Alkatiri, Governor of the Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara Timur Viktor Laiskodat and others.
