Nyctereutes


Nyctereutes is a genus of canid which includes only one extant species, the raccoon dog. Nyctereutes first enters the fossil record 5.5 million years ago in northern China. It was one of the earliest canines to arrive in the Old World. All but one species became extinct before the Pleistocene.

Taxonomy

Nyctereutes was named by Temminck. It was assigned to the family Canidae by Carroll and by Geraads.
