2004 Parliamentary General Election
Results of the 13th parliamentary election held on 2 April 2004 for the district: The following candidates were elected: Arumugam Thondaman, 99,783 preference votes ; Muthu Sivalingam, 85,708 pv; S. Jegadhiswaran, 81,386 pv; S. B. Dissanayake, 71,723 pv; C. B. Rathnayake, 55,284 pv; N. D. N. P. Jayasinghe, 44,229 pv; and Periyasamy Chandrasekaran, 42,582 pv. S. B. Dissanayake vacated his seat on 7 December 2004 after being jailed by the Sri Lankan Supreme Court for contempt of court. His replacement Renuka Herath was sworn in on 30 January 2006. Periyasamy Chandrasekaran died on 1 January 2010. His replacement Santhanam Arulsamy was sworn in on 5 February 2010.

B. Rathnayake, 41,345 pv; Palani Digambaran, 39,490 pv; and Sri Ranga Jeyaratnam, 33,948 pv. The National Union of Workers left the United National Front alliance on 22 April 2010 after a dispute over National List seats. Palani Digambaran, their sole MP, is to function as an independent MP.
